New LED Packaging Technology Unveiled by Nationstar at ISLE 2023

Mini/Micro LED packaging technology is on the rise, and emerging applications such as virtual photography, glasses-free 3D, educational spaces, and home theaters are pushing the LED display industry towards smaller and micro-pitch development.

To keep up with this trend, Nationstar, as a leading LED packaging company, showcased a range of cutting-edge LED displays at the ISLE 2023 exhibition, including the MiP series, IMD series, and the high-end REESTAR brand, demonstrating the latest in LED display technology.

1. Nationstar MiP LED Packaing Technology Boosts Mini/Micro LED Developmentess?

One of the obstacles to the commercialization of Mini/Micro LED is the ultra-small size of the chips, which presents challenges in terms of production processes, materials, performance, and cost. Various companies are trying different packaging solutions to accelerate the development of Mini/Micro LED.

As one of the Mini/Micro LED packaging solutions, MiP (Micro/Mini LED in Package) has gained rapid attention in the LED industry due to its simple production process, low requirements for substrate accuracy and mass transfer, and good compatibility with existing production equipment.

At the ISLE exhibition, Nationstar’s MiP series, including the ultra-thin MiP-C0606FTP and the common cathode-designed MiP-C0404, was unveiled for the first time. These series of products are suitable for High-definition indoor LED screen with a pitch range from P1.5 to P0.6. Mr. Chen, the person in charge of Nationstar, stated that MiP technology is an extension of existing SMD technology, which can effectively solve the three major issues that currently limit the development of Micro LED: yield rate, cost, and display effect.

In addition, MiP technology will have a greater production advantage in the future application of even smaller chip sizes. One of the key features of MiP is its strong compatibility, which reduces the risk of a long return on investment due to excessive upfront investment for both upstream and downstream LED display industries.

Although MiP packaging technology provides a low-cost and efficient Mini/Micro LED mass production route, it is a relative latecomer, and it still requires industry and market recognition.

Mr. Chen also admitted that MiP products are currently in their infancy and have a large development space. Nationstar is working with the supply chain to optimize MiP technology and plans to increase MiP production capacity this year.

The development of MiP packaging technology requires the joint participation of upstream and downstream companies.

2. Enriching IMD Solutions and Exploring MiniLED Market

In addition to the MiP technology, IMD is also a critical packaging solution for MiniLED. Nationstar showcased a rich combination of IMD packaging schemes at the ISLE exhibition, suitable for any pitch range from P0.9 to P0.4.

These IMD solutions have high-cost performance, cinema-grade color gamut, scalable production, high-density packaging, and other features that can improve Mini LED production capacity, reduce costs, and enhance display performance.

Mr. Chen said that the market recognizes the display effect of MiniLED, and from a production point of view, MiniLED has already had a significant decrease in cost. However, due to MiniLED’s focus on high-end conceptual markets, its application is still limited.

To expand the market for MiniLED, it is necessary to develop more cost-effective and practical solutions.

Mr.Chen expects that with the gradual recovery of engineering projects, the demand for MiniLED will increase in the second half of this year.

Therefore, Nationstar is preparing for product cost reductions, and the IMD solution can further promote the cost reduction of MiniLED and drive the growth of market demand.

3. REESTAR Helps Growth of Emerging Applications for LED Displays

Mini/Micro LED is the focus of LED display technology, and XR LED screen virtual shooting is undoubtedly one of the hottest applications of LED displays. At this year’s ISLE exhibition, LED display manufacturers have shown their own virtual shooting solutions.

As one of the earliest LED displays companies to jointly develop the virtual shooting market, Nationstar also showcased the high-end brand REESTAR’s key indoor new product RS-XR1515, which is specifically designed for virtual shooting applications.

It has an excellent performance in contrast, brightness, light emission angle, and energy consumption, meeting the requirements of virtual shooting.

In recent years, virtual shooting has grown rapidly in overseas markets, and LED display companies have thus taken advantage of the trend and seen growth in demand for display products.

Regarding the future development of virtual shooting, Mr. Chen believes that overall, although the virtual shooting market is in its early stages, its application scenarios are broad.

In addition to film and advertising shooting, it could also be used for live streaming, gaming entertainment, and even cinema screens in the future. Therefore, Nationstar is optimistic about the growth potential of the domestic and foreign virtual shooting markets.

Nationstar also showcased the REESTAR brand’s RS-1415 and RS-1111 device products, which are designed for outdoor ultra-high-definition scenes such as city squares and central business districts.

It is reported that outdoor display applications such as naked-eye 3D and creative displays are gradually expanding, and Nationstar is particularly concerned about such emerging outdoor application markets.

According to Mr. Chen, the company understands from its contact with customers that the operating costs of outdoor large screens are high and high-definition display applications such as naked-eye 3D further increase the energy consumption of display screens.

Therefore, Nationstar’s outdoor products adopt a strategy of increasing quantity without increasing price, improving product reliability, and optimizing materials to reduce product power consumption, significantly reducing the operating costs of outdoor displays, and eliminating customers’ concerns about outdoor LED display applications.
